Read the legend before interpreting a map

Geological maps show rock units, contacts, and structures using colors and symbols. A contact marks a boundary between mapped units. Colors do not have one universal meaning across all maps, so read the legend and scale. Lines may also distinguish observed boundaries from inferred ones, making uncertainty part of the interpretation.
