Separate event size from local shaking

Magnitude describes an earthquake’s size using measurements of its source or waves. Intensity describes shaking and its effects at a particular location. One earthquake can produce different intensities because distance, ground conditions, and other factors vary. Magnitude estimates may be revised, but they are not a separate local shaking score for every town.
