Use several identifying properties

Mineral identification combines properties such as hardness, streak, crystal form, and cleavage. Cleavage is the tendency to split along particular flat planes. Hardness describes resistance to scratching; streak is the color of the powdered mineral. Surface color alone can mislead because impurities and weathering may change it. Several consistent properties provide a stronger identification than color alone.
