A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic solid with an ordered internal structure and a characteristic chemical composition. A rock can contain several minerals or consist mainly of one. Granite commonly contains quartz and feldspar, while some limestone consists mainly of calcite. Naming a mineral and naming a rock answer different questions.
