Match a rate to its time interval

A geological rate compares change with elapsed time. An average erosion or uplift rate over a long period can hide pauses and rapid events. Applying that average to one short interval assumes behavior remained comparable. Before extrapolating, check what was measured, the interval, and whether the process could vary.
