Follow sediment into rock

Sedimentary rocks can form from accumulated fragments, chemical precipitation, or biological material. Sand can become sandstone through compaction and cementation. Layers may record changes in material or depositional conditions, but they do not automatically represent equal intervals of time. To interpret a layer, examine grain size, structures, and its relationship to nearby layers.
