Check that layers have not been overturned

In an undisturbed sedimentary sequence, lower layers were deposited before higher layers. This principle is called superposition. Folding or overturning can change the present arrangement, so position alone is not always enough. Sedimentary structures and broader field relationships help establish which direction was originally upward.
