Understand what moves as a plate

Tectonic plates are pieces of the lithosphere, the crust and rigid uppermost mantle. A plate can include both continental and oceanic regions. Plates move relative to each other over the weaker, mostly solid asthenosphere. Plate boundaries therefore need not follow coastlines, and continents are not the only material carried by moving plates.
