Identify sideways motion

At a transform boundary, plates move sideways past each other. These boundaries do not create or consume lithosphere in the way divergent and subduction boundaries do. Friction can prevent smooth motion, allowing strain to build before a slip event. Many faults occur away from plate boundaries, so not every fault is a transform boundary.
