After sustained contact between the Americas and other continents began, plants, animals, people, and diseases moved across oceans. Crops changed diets, while introduced diseases devastated many Indigenous communities. Conquest, dispossession, and coerced labor shaped these exchanges; the effects were deeply unequal.
