Different paths to independence

Decolonization took different forms, including negotiation, mass mobilization, and armed conflict. Independence changed political authority but did not automatically remove unequal economic relationships or resolve disputes about borders and citizenship. Comparing cases requires attention to local movements and wider international conditions.
