The growth of early cities

Early cities developed in regions including Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. They brought together craftspeople, traders, farmers, officials, and other workers. Food supplies, water management, exchange, and political institutions supported urban life. Large buildings alone cannot tell us how all residents lived.
