Explaining the First World War

The First World War began in 1914 amid interacting tensions involving alliances, imperial rivalries, nationalism, and military planning. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered a crisis, but did not by itself explain the wider war. Decisions by governments shaped how the crisis escalated.
