Mali and trans-Saharan exchange

West African states including Mali participated in networks connecting the Sahel and North Africa. Gold, salt, and other goods moved through these routes, alongside people and ideas. Commercial centers also supported scholarship and religious life. Trade was important, but did not explain every aspect of society.
