History, memory, and interpretation

Monuments, museums, anniversaries, and family stories shape public memory. They select and interpret the past for particular audiences and purposes. Historians can study those choices as evidence while also asking what is omitted. New evidence can change an interpretation without making every interpretation equally well supported.
