From Roman republic to empire

Rome’s republic had offices, assemblies, and a Senate, with unequal access to power. Expansion and internal conflict contributed to changes in political authority. Under emperors, some republican institutions continued, but power became concentrated around the emperor. Institutional names do not always reveal how power works.
