What a character wants

A character’s goal helps readers understand choices and obstacles. Goals can change, conflict, or remain partly hidden. A reader should distinguish a stated goal from a motive inferred from behavior. A student wants to return a borrowed book before moving away, even though the owner is difficult to find.
