A comparison beyond the literal

Figurative comparisons connect things to suggest a quality or relationship. A simile explicitly compares; a metaphor presents one thing in terms of another. Saying that a waiting room is an island may suggest isolation rather than literal geography. To interpret the comparison, ask which features the surrounding passage supports.
