Using context carefully

Historical and social context can illuminate language, institutions, and expectations in a work. Context should help explain textual details, not replace reading them. A character’s speech does not automatically state the beliefs of every person in a period. Verify contextual claims and distinguish what the text shows from what an external source establishes.
