Patterns across a whole work

A motif is a recurring element such as an image, situation, or action. A theme is an idea the work develops; the two are related but not interchangeable. Repeated scenes at doorways may form a motif that contributes to an idea about belonging. Track both repetition and variation before claiming a pattern.
