Start with what the text says

Close reading begins with specific words, actions, and patterns in a text. Separate an observation from an interpretation of it. An interpretation should explain the evidence rather than replace it with an unsupported guess. In our example, a character folds a letter without opening it; the action is visible, but the reason remains uncertain.
