When a narrator’s account is uncertain

A narrator can be unreliable because of limited understanding, mistaken memory, self-interest, or deliberate deception. First-person narration is not automatically unreliable. Compare the narrator’s account with other details and contradictions in the text. If a narrator claims never to lie but later admits inventing a story, the tension deserves attention.
