From topic to a larger idea

A topic is a subject such as friendship or loss. A theme is an idea about that subject developed through the work. A theme need not be a simple moral instruction, and one work can support several themes. Look at choices, outcomes, contrasts, and repeated details before proposing a thematic reading.
