Averages in everyday data
Calculate a mean and use it to compare a small set of values.
Share the total equally
The arithmetic mean is the sum of all values divided by how many values there are.
Worked example
Mean of 4, 6, 8 = (4 + 6 + 8) ÷ 3 = 6
Count zero values too
Zero is a value and must be counted when calculating a mean. Leaving it out changes the result.
Worked example
Mean of 0, 6, 9 = 15 ÷ 3 = 5
