Scaling decimals
Multiply and divide decimals by powers of ten.
Multiply by ten or one hundred
Each digit gains place value when you multiply by a power of ten. Keep zeros where they are needed to show the new value.
Worked example
2.45 × 100 = 245
Divide by powers of ten
Each digit loses place value when you divide by ten, one hundred, or one thousand. The result becomes smaller for positive quantities.
Worked example
36 ÷ 100 = 0.36
Convert a price list
- Write three decimal prices and multiply each by 10.
- Divide your results by 10 to check that you recover the original prices.
