Division and remainders
Share quantities equally and interpret what is left over.
Divide into equal groups
Division tells you how many items belong in each equal group. Check a division by multiplying the result by the number of groups.
Worked example
48 ÷ 6 = 8 because 8 × 6 = 48
Use the remainder
A remainder is what cannot fit into another full group. For seats or boxes, a leftover item may require one extra group.
Worked example
29 ÷ 4 = 7 remainder 1, so 29 people need 8 four-seat tables.
Share a collection
- Divide 35 counters into groups of 4 and count the remainder.
- Explain why packing all 35 counters needs 9 bags if each holds at most 4.
