Finding an unknown
Solve one-step and two-step equations using inverse operations.
Keep both sides balanced
An equation states that two expressions are equal. Applying the same operation to both sides preserves that equality.
Worked example
x + 5 = 12 → x = 12 − 5 = 7
Undo operations in reverse
For a two-step equation, undo the added or subtracted amount first, then undo multiplication or division.
Worked example
3x + 2 = 17 → 3x = 15 → x = 5
