Translate words into steps
Identify what is given and what is being asked. Write one calculation for each step instead of trying to do everything mentally.
Worked example
Three tickets at 12 each plus a fee of 4 cost 3 × 12 + 4 = 40.
Check the result in context
Estimate first, then calculate and check the units. Ask whether the answer is sensible for the situation, including any limits or leftover amounts.
Worked example
A 50 budget minus a 40 cost leaves 10; the total cost stays within the budget.
Make a small budget
- Plan a purchase with at least two different item prices and a fixed budget.
- Calculate the total and the change, then check by adding them back together.
