Listen to the lowest part

The bass line is the low musical line in an arrangement. It can support harmony, contribute rhythmic motion, or carry an independent idea. Its notes are not always the roots of the chords. Listening separately to the bass can reveal movement that is less obvious when attention stays only on the main melody.
