A beat is a recurring pulse that listeners can follow in much music. The notes do not all have to occur on that pulse: some can last across several beats or fall between them. Imagine tapping evenly while a singer performs a varied phrase. Your regular taps follow the beat, while the singer’s timing forms a rhythm.
