The distance between pitches

An interval describes the distance between two pitches. A melodic interval is heard in succession; a harmonic interval is heard with the pitches together. In Western notation, interval names depend on note spelling as well as distance. Describing whether a melody moves by nearby pitches or wider leaps is a useful starting point.
