A tonal center

In tonal music, a key establishes a central pitch and related pitch relationships. The tonic often acts as a point of stability or return. A key is more than a list of allowed notes: emphasis, harmony, and endings help establish the center. A note outside the main collection does not automatically mean the music has changed key.
