Establish a new tonal center

Modulation is a change of key within tonal music. A new accidental or a brief unusual chord is not enough by itself to establish a lasting change. Look for evidence that the music begins treating a different pitch as a center, such as sustained harmonic emphasis and cadences in the new key.
