A small idea with a larger role

A motif is a short, recognizable musical idea that can help connect larger passages. Its identity may involve rhythm, pitch shape, or both. Repetition alone is not the whole analysis: ask where the idea returns and what changes around it. The same motif can sound different when harmony, register, or instrumentation changes.
