Higher and lower sounds

Pitch is the perceived height of a sound. It differs from loudness: a low note can be loud, and a high note can be quiet. In our example, two tones have similar length and level, but the second has a higher pitch. Sounds without a clear single pitch, such as many percussion sounds, can still have musical roles.
