Silence has a place in the pattern

A rest is a notated period of silence for a part. Silence can separate ideas, create space for another part, or contribute to a rhythmic pattern. A rest in one part does not necessarily silence the whole ensemble. When a singer pauses while a drum continues, only the singer’s part has stopped sounding.
