Repeat a pattern at another pitch level

A musical sequence repeats a short pattern at a different pitch level. The repeated version preserves enough of the pattern to be recognized while moving it upward or downward. This differs from simply replaying the same notes. A sequence can create direction, but its effect depends on the harmony and surrounding passage.
