Divide a beat into smaller parts

Subdivision divides a beat into smaller time units. In simple meter, a beat commonly divides into two equal parts; in compound meter, into three equal parts. These labels describe the division, not the number of performers. Playing more subdivisions within each beat need not make the underlying pulse faster.
