Emphasis away from expected strong points

Syncopation places emphasis where the established meter leads listeners to expect less emphasis, such as between beats. It may also sustain a sound across a strong beat instead of beginning a new sound there. The effect depends on a reference pulse and grouping. Syncopation does not automatically change the meter.
