How fast the beat moves

Tempo describes the speed of the underlying beat. Beats per minute measures how many of a specified beat unit occur in a minute. A faster tempo does not necessarily mean that every sound is short or loud. A performer can hold one note across several quick beats, or play many short notes over a slow pulse.
