Why instruments sound different

Timbre is the quality that helps distinguish sounds with similar pitch and loudness. The balance of overtones and the way a sound begins, develops, and fades can contribute. A flute and a violin playing the same note need not sound alike. A change of timbre does not necessarily change the melody.
