Three notes built in thirds

In Western tonal theory, a triad combines a root, a third, and a fifth. Major and minor triads differ in the size of the third above the root. These labels describe pitch relationships, not a guaranteed emotion. A chord can be spread across registers or doubled by instruments while retaining its basic identity.
