Comparing possible explanations

Abductive reasoning asks which explanation best accounts for the evidence. Relevant considerations include fit with observations, consistency with established knowledge, and the assumptions required. The best available explanation remains open to revision. An explanation should be compared with alternatives rather than accepted only because it is imaginable.
