Duties and limits on action

Deontological approaches hold that duties, rights, or constraints can matter beyond the value of outcomes. A promise may create a reason to act even when breaking it would be convenient. Different theories disagree about exceptions and conflicting duties. Understanding the approach does not settle every difficult case.
