Freedom and causal determination

Determinism is the view that the past and laws of nature fix what happens. Compatibilists argue that some meaningful forms of freedom or responsibility can coexist with determinism. Incompatibilists deny the relevant compatibility. Both labels cover different theories; defining a position is separate from proving it correct.
