Separate a method from competing explanations

A study compares two learning methods, but one group studies in quiet and the other with interruptions. The environment varies with the method, so it is a confound. A difference in later scores cannot be cleanly attributed to the method. Keep relevant conditions comparable and assign methods appropriately when designing a causal comparison.
