Use an error to guide the next attempt

Feedback is most useful when it gives information a learner can act on. Saying that an answer is wrong identifies a result but may not explain the problem. Pointing out a mistaken step and inviting a new attempt can guide revision. Feedback should concern the task and evidence rather than a fixed judgment about the learner.
