Identify reinforcement by its effect

In operant conditioning, reinforcement is a consequence that increases the future frequency of a behavior in the relevant setting. Calling something a reward does not establish that it reinforced the behavior. If praise follows a practice attempt, check whether attempts subsequently increase before concluding that praise functioned as reinforcement.
