Detect signals

Sensation involves detecting physical signals, such as light or sound, through sensory systems. Perception concerns how sensory information is organized and interpreted. Hearing a sound and recognizing it as a familiar ringtone are related but distinguishable processes. Detection alone does not settle what caused a signal or what it means.
