Ask about consequences for a social system

A functional perspective examines how practices contribute to the operation of a social system and how they may create difficulties. Intended, recognized consequences differ from unintended or less recognized ones. A club may aim to teach a skill while also creating friendships. Identifying a function does not prove that a practice is necessary or benefits everyone.
